Using Your iPhone with Donet Email

Using Your iPhone with Donet Email

The iPhone is one of my all-time favorite business tools.  It’s sleek, functional, and extremely versatile — so versatile, in fact, that we issue an iPhone to each of our network and systems administrators so they can monitor and remotely control our infrastructure wherever there is cell phone coverage.

One of the killer iPhone apps is email.  When I was at the AT&T store this afternoon picking up another one for our newest administrator, the AT&T salesperson told me that he had encountered quite a few customers buying iPhones who had an @donet.com email address.  They weren’t sure if they could use the iPhone with their Donet email box.

The answer, of course, is yes — it is very easy to setup and use the iPhone email app with your Donet email account.  Here are the basic steps:

  1. Click on the “Settings” app.  Scroll down the list and select “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”.
  2. Under “Accounts” click “Add Account…”. When the list of account types to add pops up, select “Other”.
  3. Enter your name as you would like it to appear in “Name”.  For “Address”, enter your @donet.com email address (e.g., “jdoe@donet.com”). For “Password”, enter the password for your Donet email box.  For Description, enter “Donet email”.  When all that is entered properly, press the “Save” button.
  4. You’ll now be prompted to choose between “IMAP” and “POP”.  “IMAP” is the default, and correct, setting — so leave that alone.  Leave the “Name”, “Address”, and “Description” fields alone, and scroll down to “Host Name”.  Enter “pop3.donet.com” for the “Host Name”.  For “User Name”, enter your Donet email box username.  Leave the “Password” field as is.
  5. Under “Outgoing Mail Server”, use “smtp.donet.com” as the “Host Name”.  Re-enter your Donet username and password for the “User Name” and “Password” fields.  When all that is entered properly, press the “Save” button.
  6. Your iPhone will verify the IMAP account information, and warn you that “the certificate … may not be valid”.  That’s OK — press “Continue”.
  7. That’s it!  You can now send and receive email through your Donet mailbox from your iPhone.

One important note: If you use your iPhone to connect to your mailbox via IMAP, you will probably also want your desktop computer to use IMAP as well.  POP normally downloads all your emails off our servers to your machine, which means they will no longer be available to read on your iPhone.  It’s best to have both your mobile and desktop email applications in sync, and IMAP is a better solution in that environment.
